Scottsdale is located in the Salt River Valley, or Valley of the Sun, in the northern Sonoran Desert, with the McDowell Mountain Range nearby. It is both an old and a new city. More than 1,000 years ago, the prehistoric civilization Hohokam farmed and built canals in the area. Later, Scottsdale was the site of a Pima village, and European settlers staked a claim in the region in the 1860s. The area remained a village, however, until the 1950s. Between the 1950 and 2010, the population jumped from about 2,000 to 217,000.
Today, Scottsdale is known as an affluent city bordering Phoenix. It’s a tourism hub, with millions of visitors coming each year for the city’s weather, golf, shopping, nightclubs and resorts. The city has more than 70 resorts and hotels, totaling more than 15,000 hotel rooms. Downtown Scottsdale has a high concentration of galleries, studios and museums.
State Route 101, also called Loop 101, gives Scottsdale residents easy freeway access to most of the Phoenix metropolitan area and the rest of Arizona.
