A nursing home worker in Michigan confesses to abusing a patient at the Whitehall Healthcare Center. William Hill, 28, has been charged with two counts of abuse of a vulnerable adult. He faces two years in prison if convicted.
According to court documents, Thomas Johns has dementia and was in the home for only six days when he was abused on March 11, 2015. A week later, Thomas is still hospitalized. Hill confessed to punching, pushing, sitting on Thomas five times during his shift because he was agitated with him. Thomas suffered significant deep purple bruises on his chest, chin, back and torso.
Whitehall Healthcare Center is owned by Consulate Health Care in Orlando, Florida. It owns several nursing homes in several states including ten in Michigan.
This is not the first instance at Whitehall. Two years ago, the company was fined $14,700 for incidents including the death of a patient who was not given CPR. The report on medicare.gov also says 67 other patients could be at risk for serious harm, injury, and/or death.
This is why it’s essential to search key websites for information on nursing homes in your area before committing to one. Whitehall is rated much below average on medicare.gov.
If you or a loved one is searching for a nursing home, there are two websites you can visit to check a nursing home’s staffing and health inspection ratings: Medicare.gov and U.S. News and World Report. It’s also important to conduct a simple Google search on all homes you’re considering. This will bring up any reviews or news stories that may be out there. Once you’ve narrowed down your options and conducted research online, you’ll want to visit the homes.
