Self-Driving Cars Involved in Auto Accidents, Some Fatal

Self-driving or driverless cars are making their way to roads across the U.S. and abroad. As popularity and demand for these cars continues to grow, stories of auto accidents – some fatal – have surfaced. Last week, we heard of Google’s worst accident yet involving a self-driving car that Google insists was not their car’s fault. Earlier this year, one of Google’s self-driving Lexus SUV cars drove into the side of a bus at low speed – the first time their vehicle was at fault. Shortly after, the robotics expert running the program stepped down, as well as a handful of engineers involved.

But Google isn’t the only company experiencing problems. In January of this year, Tesla’s self-driving system was involved in a fatal accident in China after his Tesla Model S was using the automated driver-assist system and slammed into a road sweeper on a highway.

Then again in May of this year, Tesla’s Model S electric sedan was involved in a fatal accident in Florida when it was in self-driving mode and failed to apply the brakes when a tractor-trailer made a left turn in front of the Tesla. Most devastatingly, the driver in this accident previously posted videos on YouTube of himself riding in autopilot mode, praising the technology and even stating the system saved his car from an accident. You can view a short example video here.

Despite concerns surrounding self-driving cars, many companies are following suit, hoping to perfect the technology. Uber is beginning a pilot program in Pittsburgh and Ford announced its plan to launch its own driverless cars by 2021, as did BMW.
