Water Safety Resources in Arizona

Drowning deaths so far this year are below average thanks in large part to an ongoing emphasis on pool safety statewide. However, with school out and summer months upon us, now is the time to implement any and every precaution to keep your children safe.

The first step is to educate yourself and learn tips for ensuring your pool is safe, that your child knows how to swim, and that you know how to respond if an emergency happens. The National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization whose mission is to spread the word about water safety and drowning prevention. You can watch a video they created showing simple steps to save lives below.

The next thing you can do is find swim classes for your child. There are a few different options in Arizona, but one of our favorites is ISR – Infant Swimming Resource. They aim to teach infants, toddlers, and children the skills they need to potentially save themselves if they find themselves in the water alone. Once he or she learns these skills, your ISR instructor will test these skills with your child fully clothed. After all, if your child falls in a pool alone, he or she most likely won’t be in a swimsuit. This gives you extra comfort and better prepares your little one. Believe it or not, these classes start as young as 6 months old and will teach classes for children up to 6 years old.

Classes for 6-12 month olds focus on teaching your child to roll onto his or her back to float, rest and breathe, and maintain this life-saving position until help arrives. This short video shows how it’s done.

For children aged 1-6 years old, they will learn how to roll onto their back and float, as well. But they will also learn how to repeat this sequence until they reach the safety of the steps, side of the pool, or shoreline. Here’s a short video of what that looks like.

Finally, the best thing you can do is take first aid and CPR/AED classes. American Red Cross offers various classes options. You can see the full list here.
